Today I’m going to talk about hats. As I’ve gotten older over the last 6-7 years I’ve grown more and more fond of hats. I even had a top hat I wore for special events. I know now that was probably a little silly, but I was unmedicated back then so everything had to be extra.

I also had my favorite hat at the time, an Australian Outback hat. I liked it, but it was rather warm in the summer to wear and had a huge brim on it. So it always stuck out. But at that time that was my thing, sticking out.

I took a break from hats for a bit, wearing a beanie in the winter to keep my head warm. But now I have my Irish Scally cap that may be my favorite hat I’ve ever owned. I feel like it stands out but it also subtle. It just enhances my look and protects my bald head from UV rays without overpowering the room.

I probably put way too much thought into this. But In my 50s now, I feel like men don’t get the change to accessorize nearly as much. Women have all kinds of cool things they can do. I even have a fancy wooden cane with a skull on the end I could use if I really want to make a statement. I just need to put a rubber stopper thing on the bottom of it.

Back to hats, I’m not sure why I like hats. I think women look cool with hats and have a wide variety of hats to choose from. For men, its mostly ball caps. I did wear a ball cap for many years in my 20s and 30s. I even own several Cubs caps from their world series win years ago, but rarely wear them. I used to like them, but now I just feel I dont’ look my age with them.

The Scally cap feels really good on my head too. Its a cotton and polyester mix and isn’t too heavy but holds its shape really well. It survived our move in at my step son’s college dorm this weekend in the 108 degree heat without forming a salt ring or losing its shape.

To any guys out there wanting to wear a hat, I say find something you like and go for it. I just saw a guy in a group wearing a Godfather hat and his looked really cool. I wouldn’t look good with it, but he rocked it pretty nice.

I’m not a fan of fedoras, mainly because of the kinda douchey vibe that comes with them. THe same for the newsboy and flat caps. In some artsy scenes I’d see people wearing these and the guys were usually insufferable. I felt the Scally cap was a good compromise.

Not saying everyone who wears a fedora or flat/newsboy cap is a douchebag. Just saying my interactions with people wearing them has not been great. If you really like them, by all means wear it.

That’s one nice thing about getting older, is our GAF tends to break down and we just do whatever. I know having bipolar I’ve tended to be erratic and gotten onto weird kicks and various times. Just comes with the territory, but I try to plateau the weirdness and pace myself so those around me can keep up with wherever my head’s at in a given time.

So, that’s my advice out of all this. Wear the hat!
