As I get older, I feel more and more that REM sleep opens a portal into another plane or timeline. These are not just based on my own experiences, but from other news stories I hear of people living entire lifetimes while asleep or in a coma.
For me, this consists of a lot of things. Sometimes revisiting people who have died, sometimes I'm working a weird job, but every time reality is weird and misshapen in this dream state.
